Joke Parade is probably one of the earliest writings that is on this album, and out of all the songs it is probably one of the most political. It reminds me of dreams where you are stuck running in a circle and can’t seem to stop. You can probably read elements of anger through this number and it definitely is supported by the heavy fast music. The opening riff with the first statements stem from this idea of a kid playing with toy soldiers on a bedroom carpet. Not understanding what war is, what it means to be a soldier he kills one after another in play fighting. The child plays out the inner lion on all that may defy him and can easily choose how he wishes to win… The winning is all that matters and losing has never happened for this kid so of course why would he even think that was a possibility.
The versus are focusing on this thing we realize at some point that no matter what we do, no matter how many hours you spend at the office, no matter what your pay check.. you’re still not getting what you’re after. We’re on a wheel, circling the same drain… We only think we have freedom when we continue to pay for it… You stop paying and freedom starts to be taken away from you. The worst thing that can happen to you / for you is that you wake up and realize what you are really after is probably no longer in your grasp and that you are stuck in the gears of the machine…. Once that light is turned on, it will burn and you’ll never find peace.
